Push Pull Legs vs Upper/Lower: which one grows more?.

Neither split is better for muscle growth by itself — studies and practice keep landing on the same answer. What decides it is your schedule: Upper/Lower fits 4 days a week best, Push/Pull/Legs wants 5–6. Both hit every muscle about twice a week at those frequencies, and twice a week is the target. Pick the one whose calendar you'll actually keep.

Pick by days per week.

  • 2–3 days: Full Body. Neither PPL nor Upper/Lower gives each muscle enough frequency on 3 days.
  • 4 days: Upper/Lower. Clean two-a-week frequency for everything, sessions stay under an hour.
  • 5 days: either works — Upper/Lower with a bonus focus day, or a rolling PPL.
  • 6 days: Push/Pull/Legs, run twice. Maximum frequency and volume, if your recovery keeps up.

What each split trades away.

Push/Pull/Legs concentrates each session — chest, shoulders and triceps all get worked hard on push day, then rest a full cycle. The cost: miss a session and that muscle group waits nearly a week. On 6 days it's the highest-volume option there is; on 3 days it quietly undertrains everything.

Upper/Lower spreads the work — each half of your body gets touched twice a week no matter what. Sessions are denser (upper days especially can run long), but the structure survives a missed day much better. It's the most forgiving split that still grows.

What matters more than the split.

Hard sets per muscle per week (10–20 for the areas you want to grow) and weights that climb week over week. A mediocre split with progression beats a perfect split without it, every time. If you're debating splits but not tracking your lifts, you're optimizing the wrong thing.
